Energy, water and internet

Seven things with a deadline and one sum. The four you cannot catch up on come first.

Seven things with a deadline

  1. On the day itself

Record the meter readings cannot be caught up

With a photo and the date. Without a photo it is your word against the previous occupant's.

  2. On the day itself

Sign the inventory report cannot be caught up

This document decides whether you get your deposit back.

  3. Within 5 days

Register with the council cannot be caught up

Statutory deadline. Late can cost you a fine.

  4. Within 6 months

Have the rent assessed cannot be caught up

This one really does expire, and then it is gone.

  5. 2 weeks before

    Apply for internet

An engineer appointment easily takes two weeks.

  6. 1 week before

    Arrange your energy contract

Then it is in your name from day one.

  7. Within a week

    Report your water

The water company is not told about your move automatically.

The four

  • Energy choose The only one where there is really something to choose
  • Water report only One supplier per area, and that is the one
  • Internet choose The contract that sticks around longest
  • Council and taxes report only Five days, and then a lot starts on its own

Doing the maths

Is it worth breaking your fixed contract?

One sum you would not do in your head. You fill in both numbers yourself, so the answer is your sum and not our promise.

If the answer is negative, you do not earn the termination fee back within the term you have left. That is not advice to stay put: sometimes breaking a fixed contract makes sense for another reason, and sometimes losing a few tens is worth being rid of a supplier.

Energy, water, internet

Two you choose (energy, internet) and two you only report (water, council). That difference saves an afternoon of searching.

The list with deadlines

Register with the council

Within five days of moving, usually online with DigiD. That is a legal deadline. Without it your post and your benefits go astray.

Register with the council

Have the rent assessed

Up to six months after your contract starts, the Rent Tribunal can assess the rent against the points. After that the option is gone.

Six months
